December 2013: Joe successfully defends his PhD candidacy proposal!

December 2013: PhD students Mohammad Saifur Rahman and Sonya Adas join the group. Saifur and Sonya will be jointly supervised by Dr. Brasch and Dr. Paul Sampson. Welcome Saifur and Sonya!

Mary at Leadership ConferenceDecember 2013: Mary is selected for a ACS Student Leadership Award to attend the ACS Leadership Institute in January 2014 in Dallas, Texas. Great job, Mary!

November 2013: Dr. Brasch is recognized by the American Chemical Society (ACS) as a “Chemistry Ambassador”, as a result of the recent successes of the KSU Student Chapter of the ACS, for which she serves as a Faculty Advisor.

September 2013: After a summer of trying us out (!), graduate student Vivian Hogan joins the Brasch/Hegmann groups on a new collaborative venture between the Brasch group and the group of Dr. Torsten Hegmann in the Liquid Crystal Institute. Welcome, Vivian!

September 2013: Harishchandra’s paper on the reaction of nitroxylcobalamin with oxygen is published in Inorganic Chemistry: DOI: 10.1021/ic401975f.

August 2013: Former group member David Walker is awarded a full tuition scholarship renewable for all four years at the University of Toledo’s Medical School. Well done, David!

MaryAugust 2013: Mary is one of two KSU students selected to give an oral presentation at the 2013 Northeast Ohio NSF-REU Undergraduate Research Conference at Case Western Reserve University. Jermey and Matt present posters. Click here for photos of the conference.

Jermey RoughtonJuly 2013: The Brasch and Sampson groups are awarded an NSF grant of $400,000 from the Division of Chemistry to synthesize and carry out kinetic and mechanistic studies on novel photoactive HNO donor molecules.

July 2013: Harishchandra is awarded a travel award from the ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry to attend the ACS National meeting in Fall. Rohan is selected to present a poster in the Sci-Mix session in addition to the Inorganic Chemistry Division session at the same meeting. The Sci-Mix poster session consists of abstracts selected by division program chairs and represents “the most exceptional abstracts submitted to participating divisions” (according to the ACS!).

July 2013: Anthony passes his Ph.D. written candidacy exam. Congratulations Anthony!

July 2013: Former group member Elizabeth Schindler is accepted into Medical School at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. Congratulations Liz!

Jermey RoughtonJune 2013: Jermey Roughton from Cloud County Community College, Kansas, joins the group as part of our NSF-REU program. Welcome, Jermey!
Mary and Matt are also participating in this program this summer.

May 2013: Rohan’s paper concerning pulse radiolysis studies on the reaction between cob(II)alamin and superoxide is published online.

May 2013: Andrew Hunt graduates with a BS (Chemistry, Biochemistry Concentration) with Departmental Honors. David Walker graduates with a BS (Chemistry, Biochemistry Concentration) with University Honors. Well done both of you!

March 2013: Andrew Hunt accepts a position in the PhD program at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, for Fall 2013. Congratulations Andrew!

February 2013: Former Brasch Group member David Walker accepts a position in the University of Toledo’s medical school program for Fall 2013. David participated in the prestigious MEDStart program for prospective medical students at the University of Toledo last summer.

January 2013: Dr. Brasch presents Harishchandra’s work on the reaction between cob(II)alamin and Angeli’s salt at the Metals in Biology Gordon Research Conference in Ventura, CA.
